For this series , I am looking at the big mark in relation to the scale of the 19.75 x 4 face of each cradled board . I work them as a group to give myself time to look make a mark move the paint and let it dry. I find a connection between the flatness of the mark on the surface , the marks illusion of space because of our human way of seeing the horizon as a flat line and the insistence of the cradle as it juts out into space helping that illusion. Each cradle is 4 x 19.75 x 3. The side are left raw wood and they are permanently cleated to hold close to the wall .</image:caption>

Ambiguous in process because the paint/ collage is added : however the mark is subtracted in a myriad of steps with complete opacity and all the transitions inbetween. not subtracted. but in an additive vein I find the “hidden chair shapes ” in my gestural beginnings. They allow me some structure and of course a surface to explore color and texture, smooth against rough transition with opacity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Chair Series 24, Hans Hofmann #2 acrylic on canvas 48x36 framed with raw cap to 50x38 is in Studio 225. I enjoy using color and shapes to interact on a surface . Thin washes and thicker paint have a conversation and movement in the still of the painting . I title my paintings at the end . This painting and its sister #! show my interest and knowledge of the German born Hofmann. His sense of strong color and paint quality have always been a favorite of mine. <image:caption>Often colors have to be quieted with a glaze over , another light layer of thinned paint ... In this case I used a yellow glaze to “shush” the blue. The glazing of one of the blue stripes and not the other does 2 things: it makes the not glazed blue line stronger because it is isolated . The non glazed blue line also becomes less connected with the other yellows. Painted with Golden Acrylic paints on a 30 x 22 300lb Fabriano paper . <image:caption>Sometimes the blending of two colors seems to happen seamlessly as I push the paint into the surface. Loose Paper Graft 23, Golden Glow has that feel. The white of the paper saved during the process with OPEN acrylics, connects the intentional white line near the top. This piece has been selected by curator Gia Harewood “ Luminescence “ will be on display November 23- February 2 ,2024 for exhibition in Washington D.C.</image:caption>

<image:title>LOOSE Paper Grafts Gallery - Loose Paper Graft 23, Dragon Fly Morning</image:title>
<image:caption>Loose Paper Graft 23, Dragonfly Morning reminds of the cyclical nature of our world and of dragon flys that charm and delight us in summer . Then vanishing until the next cycle of spring into summer. The large band of yellowish paint seems to press with a heaviness not usually a description of yellow.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Paper Graft 22, Still Thinking is an exploration of color and finding ones that almost fit with some awkwardness or incompatibility is interesting to me. I like this piece with its “jolt” of light cadmium yellow and graphite and the extraordinary Phthalo blue green shade matched against/ with the magenta bar. You choose the scenario ? <image:caption>Different paints allow for a variety of outcomes. In 2013 Golden Paints accepted me into a program to train with their wonderful team of artist and scientist to be able to understand the possibilities with their products. I was lucky enough to have Patti Brady as my instructor. She is a great artist and person . During the training I was introduced to “OPEN” acrylics. They have an extended drying time . I used “open” acrylic freely over Summer Light catching the freedoms of movement and a moment in time. This work is available in studio 7 30 x 22 on 300lb Fabriano watercolor paper . unframed 1300</image:caption>

<image:title>Work in Process - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The work on the top left WILL OF THE WHISP is now complete . Reminiscent of my work at the Embassy of Quinea with the repetition of vertical marks, elongation of the format. The title Will of the Wisp is a reference to the “swamp gas “ an illuminate of soft green blue light . I have addressed this idea by emphasizing “simultaneous contrast “. Our retina is over loaded with the colors I have chosen so that After images of soft aquamarine vertical lines appear and float , appear and disappear as the viewer softly gazes across and back along the painting. See this work at Nepenthe Gallery in Alexandria Virginia.</image:caption>
